Yurts!
Yurts will soon dot the landscape of Camp Timberline in the Waianae Mountains, giving Oahu residents a fresh camp-out experience, according to Ray Sanborn, CEO of Kama`aina Kids, owner and operator of the Camp. Modeled after the portable dwelling structures used for centuries by nomads in Central Asia, modern-day yurts are much roomier than tents and are popular with families. Camp Timberline will assemble its yurts in a village and make them available to island residents for retreats and other occasions.
Sanborn said Camp Timberline’s yurts are 15 feet in diameter and can sleep four comfortably. Yurt kits are assembled in a matter of hours. The Camp intends to have
its yurt village ready for use by April 2007.
“We believe Hawaii families will embrace the yurt experience,” Sanborn says. “This is
much more than tent living. When you consider that nomads all the way back to
Genghis Khan have lived in yurts, you appreciate them for being ecological and
sustainable dwellings. Above all, yurts are fun!”
